rotates to bring the cage inboard when dropping down to the small chain ring.That pivot action brings the left end of the pivot arm into contact with the rear tire.These 29" tires make rolling over forest debris and thru marsh areas at low tide a breeze, BUT, the tight clearance on both wheels is fairly small and more than once I had to stop to remove a small branch or scrape the mud clear.In all fairness, on a single track or marked trail, neither of these would have been an issue. 2012 Diamondback Overdrive Comp, January 1, 2012 - By  7th day Sabbath (USA) First off was looking for a full suspension 29er. Tested the Trek Rumblefish and Superfly 100 and then the top dog on my list, the Santa Cruz Tall boy.I still intend on purchasing the Tallboy but at $3,000 I'll need to save for that.Plus I need a bike for my wife.So I either get one for myself or buy a cheaper 29er and get her one.Enter the Diamondback Overdrive Comp 2012 version.I found mine for a steal of a deal still in the box at $489!I was told to look longer and purchase a Cannondale, Specialized, or Trek.Well I looked at these and for the price of the Comp these other big companies couldn't compete with what Diamondback has on the their bikes in the hardtail 29er version.Components are good, but not the best but I'd say better than average.The saddle is a bit hard and I will probably replace this.The bike on the trail handles exceptionally well.Again all I have to compare this too was the full suspension 29ers I was spending much time on.The last one being the the Tallboy by Santa Cruz, an expensive boutique bike that is rated as one of the best.In comparison to the FS bikes I was pleasantly surprised by the Comp.This bike can climb!In rock gardens, turns, or anything this bike can handle it.I've shown it to may people and they are really surprised at the weight of the bike.It's lighter than I expected.I thought it was going to be very heavy but it's actually very manageable.Of course its not as light as the Santa Cruz or the Superfly 100 but seemed about a light as the Trek rumblefish.I do like Schimano components and SRAm for me is taking some getting used to but thats a small thing.It shifts very well and accurately.Most of the other big companies have a 29er in a hard tail, but like I said they don't offer what DB does for the price, and as I tested their bikes the DB Comp 29er performs better than their 29er hardtails!I think sometimes you are paying for the name on these other 29er hard tails.Here is some honest truth though.In comparison to the big two, Trek & Specialized, Diamondback customer service is terrible.The previous reviewer is one I certainly can agree on.I called looking for a chainstay protector and after being transferred to different departments I finally got a person in the Mountain bike dept.I was expecting a fellow rider/mechanic.The guy knew nothing of what I was asking him and I tried to explain it to him.I began asking other questions about the integrated headset and what I could do to change it to a Cane Creek and the guy was clueless telling me to go to local bike shop that carried their bikes.I was literally so bugged I hung up on the man.I know this was rude, but I found it quite disturbing that a bike company has people answering calls to things they know nothing of.That is their own products.I've called other companies and have never had this problem.You ask about their bikes and they give you answers, plain and simple as it should be.So, just beware, the bike rocks and is very capable cycle that you will not be disappointed in but customer service is tragic.Hey Diamondback, PLEASE GET REAL BIKE PEOPLE TO REPRESENT YOU WHEN YOU CALL IN FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE LIKE OTHER BIKE COMPANIES DO!OTHERWISE YOU ALL END UP LOOKING QUITE FOOLISH.This is the only reason I give this bike 4 stars because of the lackadaisical customer service.The plus is a lifetime warranty on the frame just as the other big companies but you have to call in and deal with incompetent people.Had the bike for a month and love riding it every moment and for the price, under $500, I can know get my wife the MYKA or the Trek X-Caliber 29er WSD.The DB Overdrive Comp retails for about $949 where I've seen it so anything below that is a good deal and as you'll see compared to other companies you get more bang for the buck.Be aware the Overdrive Comp and Pro come in a Mat Silver and Mat White Color.The lower level bikes are a gloss paint finish, which are the overdrive and the overdrive sport.The picture I thought was a gloss finish but it's a mat silver.I'm getting used to it and looks really good in person.You might be able to see it at you LBS or a Dicks's sports.Buy this bike and save big, you'll be very happy with it.I weight about 215 and I'm about 5 foot 11 and I went with the large.I could've gone with the medium but got the large, I may change the stem from the 90mm to a 70mm just to shorten up the cockpit a little, I may upgrade the bars to some Eastons also to lighten up the front end too a bit.Also may go tubless and save about 3/4 a lb more.So, I hope this helps.Its a great bike and haven't had not issues with it.I'll update if I find any that arise and what customer service does.

very low quality stainless steel parts, July 4, 2010 - By  Olga- on the bike started to rust after only one month. I've never seen anything like that even with cheap bike I had before. Today I had a spoke broken, and I can see that it's just rusted all the way through. Weight or hard riding was not a problem, I'm only 100 pounds and was riding on the roads. Will take it back to Sports Chalet and see what they will tell me.

After a hard spill and some broken bones, I gave up biking for several years, but recently decided to start up again.I did my homework and finally decided on the Diamondback Response to help me jump back in.I bought the bike for $400 and it was an excellent price for the quality received.This bike is heavy duty, rugged, and durable.If Rambo rode a bike, it would be this one.Assembly was much easier than I expected....and Amazon shipped very quickly!Not only is the bike aesthetically pleasing, but most of the parts are adjustable to configure the bike to your like and style of riding.All the parts are high quality....I honestly couldn't find one weak link in the whole design.I tried to put it through hell on my first outing and it didn't even flinch.Diamondback's reputation is secure....they did not let me down!Ultimately, this bike safe and reliable.I would recommend it to any level rider.

This was a good looking bike going into this, and an even better one when putting it together for the first time and riding it.The frame feels solid and the components are pre assembled so there's no super pain when dealing with de-railers. Certain Parts on the breaking system feel slightly cheesy and take a little bit to break in, but once you get it broken in, it works fine.If your looking at getting this, I'd recommend it as something for someone looking to go out and have fun riding trails around. If you're looking for a light bike that you can rely on, I'd safely say that I could take this out and know it'll get me home.

Great looking bike, decent components, fair price., February 14, 2012 - By  gringosp- and got a large, which feels comfortably big. It'll be my ride for an upcoming XTerra Triathlon on trails, but mostly it's going to be a city cruiser, to which it seems very well suited.Also, the price is very right. It was the best 29er I found, with disc brakes, around $500.Really the only drawback are the gears. They work, but not beautifully, and they don't inspire much confidence to ride hard.Other than that, be prepared for some assembly. It's a nice little DIY project and comes with useful instructions and tools. Still I needed a few other tools and some Googling to get it right, especially to adjust the derailleurs.Have fun. I'm off for a ride!

Bought a 17" version for my wife who's 5'7" and it is a perfect fit. Well-built for this price range, shifts smooth, brakes are great. Rode it on moderate trails and bike held up really well. The seat isn't the best but can be easily swapped. If you're looking for a quality entry-level mountain bike this is a good option.

Moreover, Giant, Specialized, and Trek cannot touch this price point and, although you must compromise on weight, front fork, and grouping, you will get a whole lot of bike for a low price. - By the way, yes, I both own and ride this bike, along with my Giant TCX Crossbike.UPDATE: The day I wrote my review, the bike was on sale. Now that the price is back up, I would knock off a 1/2 a star, since the value is diminished. I'm not saying it's not worth Amazon's price, only that if I were you, I would consider waiting for a sale.

The Diamondback Response Sport is a very good value in a hardtail mountain bike as you are getting a relatively high end frame design with mid range components.The modified top tube design is a strengthen design borrowed from higher end Diamondback models and similar to some Specialized bikes.The only catch is that the shift levers and front caliper are not up to the same quality as the rest of the package.The platform pedals are OK for around town and park trails, but you may want to upgrade them for serious single track riding.I combined this with a top quality suspension seatpost which I find to be the optimum combination of lighter weight and control with some softening of the roughest bumps.The Diamondback site and some retailers have a more complete description of which frame size is most appropriate for your height.The advantage of buying from Amazon is that you can readily get XS, S or XL frame sizes rather than having to settle for Medium or Large at a local shop or sporting goods box store.The bike arrives mostly assembled, but plan to spend a full Saturday afternoon to correctly reset the derailer travel limits and align the front caliper if you do not take it to a local shop for a professional tune up.

Good city bike, mediocre off road, September 18, 2010 - By  notanavidshopper- Please be advised that the bike you're buying online is not assembled. Several local bicycle stores in my area had it in stock for $229 fully assembled and ready to ride.The 2010 model is a world different from previous years, don't be confused when reading online reviews.The bad:- imprecise shifting mechanism- terrible front suspension- too weak for rugged mountain trailsThe Good:- aluminum and simple, very light- fully serviceable, upgradeable and repairable, unlike bikes from WalMart and similar stores- best entry level mixed terrain bike for the moneyIn my opinion, this is a very good city/commuter bike that can handle potholes, mud and snow, thus making it great for city riding. Don't try jumping over logs and boulders and it will serve you well for quite some time. There are very few aluminum bikes in that price range, and this one seem to be the best, so I bought one. Great for someone just learning or not willing to make a $500 commitment, which is an average price for a real rugged MTB. The front shock is so weak that it's completely pointless, and is likely to fail sooner than later. Keep it clean and lubricated to prolong it's service. If you're riding in the city, consider upgrading to a softer tire, as the original is very hard and noisy.Good luck and ride safe!

For commuting - a great bike and very speedy & smooth, April 14, 2011 - By  Baivab Mitra "Save a tree, one at a time" (NJ)     . Somehow I liked the ride of this one. It's really, really smooth and the best part is it's actually pretty darn fast; in the sense that it accelerates so smoothly that I didn't realize how fast I am! It's a bit on the heavier side I think. I checked the parts, I believe everything is upgradeable which is good. 'Bout the fork however not too sure since I dont think it'll allow to go for bigger tires, thinner - is possible. Shimano gear system is good but it's their startup line. I haven't yet got the hang of the gear system though.The only bad thing is the DiamondBack guide which comes along. It's really a joke.
